Before & After Care

What to do

Before Treatment

General guidelines to follow

DO

Hydrate + Moisturize

  • Drink a lot of water during the full course of your treatment sessions and keep the treatment area well moisturized for the best hair removal results.
  • Try avoiding caffeine and alcohol 24-hours before treatment as this could make you more sensitive to pain, and also to promote further hydration in the skin.

Clean + Fresh

  • Always arrive to your appointment in good hygiene. Also depending on the area being treated avoid makeup or deodorant prior to the service.

Consult your Doctor

  • If you have any health conditions that impact your skin, heart, blood or hair growth you should always consult your physician first.

Be Honest

  • Always tell your electrologist the truth and disclose all heath conditions when completing the forms provided.

DON'T

Use of Serious Retinoids

  • Stop using retinoids at least 1 week prior to treatment. Accutane 6 months prior to treatment.

Bleach Hair

  • Never bleach hair right before an appointment. The hair is harder to see and remove.

Sun Exposure

  • Stay out of the sun for at least 48 hours prior to electrolysis treatment to avoid dilation of the blood vessels.

Shave

  • If you are getting a dense area treated like the bikini, groin, underarm or beard, shave 3-5 days before your appointment (depending on growth rates) to ensure all hairs being treated are in the Anagen growth phase. The hair must be long enough to be removed with tweezers during the treatment. Once you have started electrolysis, areas being treated may  NOT be waxed, tweezed or threaded. They may cause an increase in hair growth activity. You can shave or trim between treatments.

Managing Pain & Discomfort

  • Apply a numbing cream as directed on the label before arriving to your appointment. You can buy it from the pharmacy or ask your doctor to prescribe one that’s a bit stronger.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohol & chocolate 24 hours prior.
  • Avoid treatment during menstruation because some women find they are more sensitive during this time.
What to do

After Treatment

General guidelines to follow

DO

Soothe + Sterilize

  • For the first 24 hours after treatment keep the area clean with mild soap and water, witch hazel, Neosporin & aloe vera to soothe and sterilize the area.

Reduce Inflammation

  • Your skin may appear red and slightly puffy immediately after treatment, but this will disappear within 1-2 hours. To reduce any possible swelling apply a cold compress if needed.

Schedule Your Next Appointment

  • Make sure you get the time-slot that works best for your lifestyle as well as your customized appointment plan for the best results.

Reach out

  • Please contact MG Electrology if any unusual reactions occur which appear to be related to the treatment, as well as questions and concerns.

DON'T

Increased Risk of Infection

  • Avoid rubbing, scratching, and over touching the treated area within the first 24 hours post-treatment. Do not use any abrasive scrubbing action on the treated areas.

Alcohol Based Products

  • Refrain from using products containing perfume or other harsh chemicals for 1 to 2 days after treatment. Isopropyl alcohol burns and can irritate the treated area because the pores are open. If needed, wipe the area with witch hazel.

Remove Scabs

  • It’s normal for scabs to form after electrolysis, so it is important to never pick them. Removing a scab prematurely can cause scars and increase chances of infection. Apply antibiotic cream or aloe gel to accelerate the healing process.

Clog Pores

  • Refrain from applying makeup, deodorants or any other products that may clog the pores of the treated area.

Sun + Swim

  • Stay out of the sun and or tanning salons for 72 hours to avoid pigment spots. If you will be in the sun, be sure to use a sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF or higher.
  • Swimming is not recommended for 48 hours after your treatment. This is to avoid infection and or skin irritation, because the pores are open. This includes chlorine, salt and fresh water.

Sweat Excessively

  • Engagement in activities that cause excessive sweating, like working-out or sitting in a sauna, immediately after treatment can trigger a build-up of bacteria and cause infection.
